A few nights ago I was reminded of an episode of Super Nanny where she's trying to sleep-train a two-year-old who cries out, "Mommy! I'm dying, mommy! I'm dying! I'm dying!!!" to get his mom to come in and take him out of his crib. Well, whenever the twins get sick, we (against our better judgment) will occasionally take them to bed with us and rock them back to sleep. This means when they get better we have to sleep-train them all over again. This particular night, Isaac pulled out every trick in the book to summon us to his room in the middle of the night. It was really starting to wear on us until he resorted to the most dramatic, Oscar-winning speech I've heard out of him yet: "Mama! Mama, please!!! Please, please, please, mama....PLEASE! MAMA, PLEASE!" I just burst out laughing--it's so endearing that he tried the polite, sweet approach (after the temper tantrum approach didn't work out so well). It didn't win him a trip out of the crib, but it did win him some mommy points!

Mama Drama!
I don't think Ryan and I were fully prepared for the "expressive" personalities that come with toddlerhood. One of the best survival tactics is seeing the humor in the situation--because if you get sucked into it, you'll be eaten alive!

Watch Out Fishermen: Here Comes Audrey!
I think Audrey will soon be joining the fishing ranks of cousin Graham and Uncle Jeremy. For Christmas, we got the twins a new bath toy: a fishing pole with magnetic "fish" (actually a fish, duck, and turtle--isn't there something just a little wrong with fishing for a duck?). Isaac has taken no interest in it, but we can't tear Audrey away! In fact, she has figured out the magnet polarity and that she can only "catch" fish when they're right side up. So...she lines up her fish, right side up, steadily aims and lowers the pole, and...voila! She's got one! And then two, and three, until she's got all of them on her hook at one time. Then she "releases" them, and starts the game all over again.
If only it were that easy in real life...right, Ryan? :)

Holding back?
Audrey's usually pretty quiet, but lately she has been full of surprises! While she only has a couple of words she uses regularly, she will occasionally spew out a random word--pronounced perfectly, mind you!--and then not use it again.
Examples? Last week, she grabbed her tee-shirt, looked up at me and said, "Shirt?" I swear she had the "h" in there and everything! And last night, she was splashing around in the bath tub, all of a sudden stopped, and said "Splash!" and then started up again. How can she pronounce these things so perfectly without any practice? Needless to say, we're very intrigued by this. Aunt Stacy insists Audrey's going to be the quiet one who all of a sudden starts talking in full-blown sentences, and I'm starting to be convinced!
Audrey's also very much into sounds right now: She roars like a lion, growls like a polar bear, hisses like a snake, and goes "vroom vroom" when she plays with cars (it's so cute to see a little girl having so much fun with cars!). She has some new dance moves, too. Ask her to "shimmy" next time you see her! (she gets her shoulders into it and everything). :)

While most 17 month olds are screaming "no" and throwing tantrums, we've got ourselves one positive little guy! Well...Isaac can still throw a good tantrum, but he has recently added "yes" to his vocabulary and we've been having so much fun with it!
Mom: "Would you like grapes or a banana for lunch?"
Isaac: "Yes!"
Mom: "You mean you want both?"
Isaac: "Yes!"
Mom: "Or neither?"
Isaac: "Yes!"
Mom: "Well, which is it--both or neither?"
(Isaac then gets really mad and impatient...he says "grapes" but not "banana" yet, so I'm sure it's really frustrating when we tease him!)
Mom: "Did you have a very busy day today?"
Isaac: "Yes!"
Dad: "Did you have a stressful day like Dad?"
Isaac: "Yes!"
We're pretty sure Isaac's day wasn't very busy or too stressful. :)
We could have a lot of fun with this one!
P.S. We took down the baby gate that blocked our entertainment center, and now Isaac is determined to play a DVD himself. It's so funny to watch him turn on the TV, hold the DVD, and push all of the buttons to try and make it work!
